Excerpt from An Essay on the Culture and Manufacture of Indigo: To Which Was Awarded the Prize of Eight Hundred Rupees by the Madras Government, 1860 The consideration of this subject may be divided into two parts, viz.: - I. - The cultivation of the plant II. - The manufacture of the dye. It may not, however, be out of place, before entering minutely into these divisions, to give a very brief general history of Indigo, as also a short account of the plants from which the dye may be obtained. Indigo, as a blue dye, was long known in India. It was first imported into Europe by the Dutch in the year 1660, and subsequently by Portuguese, French and British traders. Notwithstanding the many objections against its introduction into Europe, it became in course of time an article of extensive commercial value; so much so, as to interfere seriously with the Home trade in Woad.
