More than one foreign office left Auckland, and things got so bad that there had to be an amalgamation amongst thom for the purpose of working on such lines that they should not all be ruined. That being the case, I have reason to believe--I know, in Auckland, at any rate--that a great many of their shares were written down, and they wont year after year without any dividend, and that meant they had been insuring properties at a loss rate than they were worth. I feel convinced that if the Government starts this business in competition with the companies at present existing there will for a long time be a close fight. The former Bill, that made the thing compulsory, seems to me to have meant the absolute shutting-np of the other companies at once. This Bill being optional, it simply means we are to enter into competition. I hope the Government, if they do feel sincere on this subject, will approach it very carefully, and I myself have always kept in mind that it means a lot of worry and anxiety for somebody. I have no doubt whatever myself on that subject. I said, Sir, that I was not going to watch the clock, but I cannot do without it, the time seems to go so fast. I have just got a note here, and it is called "Bushy Park fishing." Sir, I heard the term used in Wellington, and I did not exactly know what it meant. The honourable member for Wakatipu told us something about it the other night. He told us a great deal--in fact, I think he told us quite enough. Yes, I believe he did overdo it; but it is wonderful how malicious some people are when they are supplied with information; and it is wonderful how soon they make a bad use of it.
